“We Don’t Just Want to Gain Experience Anymore, We Want to Win as Many Games as Possible” – Head Coach Zeljko Djokic Ahead of the EuroCup Women Opener NKA Universitas Pécs remain unbeaten after five rounds in the Hungarian league and head into Wednesday’s EuroCup tip-off against Spanish side Lointek Gernika Bizkaia in great form. Head coach Zeljko Djokic believes his team is ready for the international challenge, but says fan support will be crucial to success.

– On Wednesday you’ll tip off your EuroCup campaign. What do you expect from this game, and how ready is the team for the start?

– During preseason we played five tune-up games, and we’ve had five league matchups so far, exactly as planned. We wanted to have ten competitive games under our belt before the EuroCup opener. The team has been improving step by step, and the players are finding better on-court chemistry with each other. I feel we’ve reached a level where I can confidently say: we’re ready for the EuroCup. I’ve always said international competition is about gaining experience, but this year we don’t just want to gain experience, we want to win games and achieve the best possible results. Our goal is to bring out the best in ourselves and, who knows, maybe even make a run to the finals, that’s our dream.

– What do you think about your first opponent, Lointek Gernika Bizkaia?

– Gernika are a very good and experienced team. They’ve been competing in the EuroCup for years, though last season wasn’t their best, which is why they had to go through the qualifying round this year, meaning they already have two competitive games under their belt.
The Spanish league is one of the toughest in Europe, and Gernika have proven themselves capable of beating top clubs like Salamanca, Valencia, and Girona. So yes, they’re a strong opponent, but we’re in good rhythm too, and I believe we can match up with them.

– How do you see your team’s progress and the challenges ahead?

– Right now, we have just one import player, Julia Reisingerová, as Lexi Held will join us later after finishing her WNBA Finals run. We have a young, talented roster, and this competition is a great opportunity for our Hungarian players to gain international experience.
But this time, it’s not only about learning, we want to win, to compete, and to see how far we can go when we truly believe in ourselves.

– What’s your message to the fans before Wednesday’s game?

– I honestly hope we’ll see a big crowd at the Lauber Dezső Sports Hall. It’s very important for us to play in a real, electric atmosphere. We’re a hometown team in every sense, mostly Hungarian players, full of passion and potential. If we have a strong fan base behind us, we’re capable of great things. The girls deserve your support, and I’m sure the crowd’s energy will lift us on the court.
